    Thank you for your story Irina, it brought back memories of growing up in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada.
    It was a joyous festive social event in the spring in the 1970’s to go to the river and havest smelts in the night.. Immigrants from Toronto harvested bushel baskets. The best meal was always the first meal — dipped in egg and rolled in flour and salt and pepper and cooked in an electric fry pan in oil. The rest would be frozen. Wild leaks were also harvested and enjoyed in spring. I’ve read that now very small numbers of smelt are found due to invasive species.
